Which self publishing platform?

So many platforms for serial publishing!

Most of which seem to be devoted pretty much to romance and fantasy. Neither of which I write.

*Business idea! A publishing platform dedicated to noir, crime, mystery and thriller fiction!

Until that happens, I need to choose. And here is a great (albeit dated) guide to that world, from Elle Griffin.

I made a spreadsheet, which I’m pretty sure is far from complete. There are more than twenty publishing platforms out there. Royal Road, Tapas, Radish, etc. As I say, the readership skews heavily towards romance and fantasy, with all the associated subgenres. None of them feel right to me. Which leaves me with a more limited (and manageable) list of options: a blog, substack, a newsletter, Patreon, Reddit (?) and, of course, Kindle Vella.

I don’t think there’s a right answer. An author just has to build a platform somewhere (newsletter, Royal Read, Wattpad, Tapas), attract an audience to that platform with some kind of discovery (social media, Discord communities, Reddit, Hacker News, cross promotion), publish work there on a consistent basis, and then find a way to monetize it (Kickstarter, Patreon, Substack, Kindle, etc.).

The reddit search continues.
